Social Software: The Heads Up Display for Today’s Businesses
Very few of us are probably aviators, but I bet everyone of us has what we would consider our “business cockpit”. For many of us, it’s our email application. For some it might be a CRM or ERP system, an authoring application or maybe a corporate intranet homepage. In any case, there is a place where we probably spend a good bit of our time and from which we conduct our business. In my role, I spend a lot of time collaborating with others…which includes communication and content. So my Lotus Notes application became a major “business cockpit”. Every day I checked out my instruments….in-box (check)…calendar (check)…email quota (check)…folders (check). Then came social software and in less than a year, I’ve changed my focus…off the instruments…and am now able to look around…at my business. And like “heads up displays”, I don’t lose sight of the instruments, instead I have view of my business through them. This may seem a bit vague, so let me give you an example.
